Soups - A Wonderful Comfort Food For All Seasons


A hot bowl of soup and a book is what I would love to enjoy with on a cold winter day. A rainy day when it is pouring outside and really cool inside, brings with it the urge to have a steaming hot cup of my favorite soup. I am a little rigid in my tastes and preferences when it comes to food. Rigid meaning I am very particular with what I eat "It" has to look good and must taste great too.

However, this does not prevent me from exploring new tastes and experiment. It could be a delicious tomato soup with all the goodness that the red juicy vegetable has to offer or a clear chicken soup as long as its delicious. If I go by preference my three favorite soups would read as - sweet corn chicken soup, cream of almond and the chicken noodle soup. The soft noodles with all the chicken in it is heavenly.

A soup to me is a healthy and tasty concoction of ingredients. A wonderful comfort food and also a great way to get kids to enjoy vegetables and meat. A bowl of soup a day with natural ingredients is the right supplement that provides all the nutrition that growing children need. Of course, a bowl of soup according to me is too good for anybody to refuse. A globally accepted dish, it is just that the ingredients used differ depending on the particular region.

Readymade or canned soups became popular in the 19th century when canning was invented. Today, however, there is a huge choice in the packaged soups and Campbell and Knorr have become a household name. Makes it easy to just open a can or a pouch and enjoy your favorite. However, fresh homemade soup there's nothing like it.

Soups for me till sometime back was a hot liquid, however, with my pursuit to know more about food and cooking came the knowledge that soups may be served either cold or hot.

When you think of a soup you generally think hot, however, not all soups are served hot. There are soups that must be served chilled. Yes, try a cold cucumber soup and you will go head over heels for this chilled mouthwatering delight. Soups also differ in the thickening agent used. Soups may be thickened using a variety of thickening agents.

From the basic flour, cream to sauces of different kinds, starch, butter and even eggs, you have a world of choice. Based on individual preferences and also the specific soup that you are preparing the thickening agent too differs. Most of the soups in Chinese cuisine are thickened using cornflour.

Coming back to the nutritional value, there is definitely nothing that can beat the nutrition that a bowl of vegetables and meat can provide. Soups have also been a favorite with those on a diet. A bowl of soup is healthy and is filling thus reducing your appetite. A bowl of soup can ensure that you do not go on a total binge. A filling and nutritious dish, it provides your body with the nutrition and energy that it needs.
